About Express

Summer weather is finally among us. This is great news for those who enjoy the heat, but it may be a miserable time for those unhappy with scorching temperatures. Never fear! We’re here to offer you 10 cost-effective ways to beat the heat and cool down…

Whether you face desert-esque temperatures or Amazon-like humidity, keeping cool can be easier than you think! Say goodbye to being uncomfortable, overly sweaty and wishing it were winter again and say hello to sweet, cool, drafty relief.

So what can you do? Here are a few ideas:

1. HVAC Tips and Tricks: The air conditioner is often the first (and most effective) line of defense when it comes to conquering heat, but one misstep can lead to a pricey repair bill. Make sure your unit is in top shape, by checking the filter regularly, covering it when it’s not in use, and cleaning the coils.

*Keep this tidbit in mind: most units are only designed to cool down your space at least 20-25 degrees under the outdoor temperature. Forcing it to work any harder can lead to an unfortunate breakdown.

2. Beaches and Pools: One of the great summer pastimes (sorry baseball) is basking in cool water. Sometimes the best way to beat the heat is to gather a few friends and head to the nearest pool or beach. Play in the water or work on your tan. Most pools and beaches close after Labor Day, so get the most out of them while you can.

3. Shower: This may be only a temporary solution, but it can definitely help you cool down. For best results, hop in, don’t towel off completely and stand next to a fan. Spray bottles are also an effective solution when you’re out and about.

4. Hydrate: Easily one of the simplest and most important things ways to stay cool begins with simply staying hydrated. Be sure to drink plenty of water or even a sports drink. On that note, avoid heavily caffeinated and carbonated beverages, as well as alcohol, as these can lead to dehydration. Of course you can still enjoy your favorite drinks in moderation.

5. Ice Packs: You use them in coolers or to deal with injuries, but they may become your best friend in the summertime. For optimum results, consider placing a pack on your wrists. This will help to cool the blood in your veins and thus lead to you feeling cooler as a result.

6. Conserve Power: This is really something that’s applicable year-round, but when something isn’t in use, turn it off, as leaving something running all the time leads to draining energy, which, as a result, leads to additional heat production.

7. Your Biggest (Literal) Fan: This has been an effective solution to beating the heat since the dawn of time. While this may not be as effective as an AC unit, fans can help circulate air around your home, bringing the cold air that you desire to where you are.

8. Wardrobe: Some people put a lot of emphasis on their summer wardrobe selections and for good reason! Wardrobe choice can be an effective way to keep you cool while also looking cool. Avoid dark colors that tend absorb sunlight rather than reflect it. Cotton is very breathable fabric that can help keep you cool better than most synthetic fabrics.

9. Make Use Of The Shade: Summer is the perfect time to get outside, and if you’re the kind of person who thinks this way, make use of your surroundings. Trees and other forms of shade can become your greatest ally and protect you from the sun’s harsh rays. If you’re hanging out at home, invest in tables with umbrella’s to combat the sun’s heat.

10. Stay Indoors: Sometimes the most effective thing you can do is use good judgment. If the heat is too unbearable that you can’t go outside, then stay inside. Activities like yard work and running can always wait another day. This is especially important to keep in mind when considering small children, the elderly, and pets who may go outdoors.
